A Quick Review of the Sony Reader

On my way to New Orleans a few weeks back I popped into the airport book store for a little window shopping. Looking for a place to sit down and read I stumbled on a display for Sony’s new “e-reader”.

Being the technology dork that I am I stopped to check out the display, and after about 20 min of fiddling with the system and reading almost a complete chapter of the demo book “Freakanomics” I couldn’t help but feel strange draw to the device. I’ve seen and used e-readers in the past without as much as a second though, but there was something really inviting and comfortable about reading from this Sony Reader. After 20 min of reading my eyes were hardly strained which often occurs when I try to read PDFs, .DOCs, or any other type of long E-document on an LCD display.

What the Sony Reader has going for it is a unique E-ink display from the E ink corporation. According to Sony, unlike CRT or LCD displays, their E-Ink display can be viewed in all light levels and because of the way that the screen is rendered very little electricity is used to display the pages and as such it is said that the Reader can display well over 7,000.00 pages on a single charge (talk about portability).

The reader has memory slots for Sony’s proprietary memory sick as well as SD memory – Thank God Sony didn’t chose to cripple this wonderful device by only making it compatible with its proprietary memory stick. The Reader can read popular .PDF, .DOC files as well as Sony’s proprietary BBeB - E-Book format. The reader can also display .jpgs, .Gif, and .bmp files, as well as play .mp3s and .AAC files. Reader Owners can purchase e-books at Sony’s online store that’s strikingly similar to Apple’s Itunes.

Right now at $274.00 – $349.00 ,the price for this little beauty is a bit too high for me but once the price drops down to around $199 I’ll be sure to get my hands on one of these.
